Dr Nick Young
Senior Lecturer in Primary Education Studies
Cardiff School of Education & Social Policy
Overview
I am a Senior Lecturer in Primary Education Studies and Affiliated Research Lead of the Centre for International Research of Interactive Technologies in Teaching and Learning (CIRITTL) at Cardiff Metropolitan University. My work is driven by a commitment to enhancing learning through the purposeful and ethical use of digital technologies across educational contexts.
Before entering higher education, I worked as a primary school teacher in South Korea, Spain, and Wales, experiences that have shaped my understanding of teaching, learning, and cultural diversity. This global perspective continues to inform my teaching and research practice at Cardiff Met.
My research focuses on digital technology in education, cross-cultural collaboration, and health and wellbeing, with an emphasis on the transformative potential of interactive and emerging technologies in teaching and learning. I have led and contributed to a number of international collaborative research projects, working with partners across Europe, Africa, and North America to explore innovative, inclusive approaches to learning design.
I have also contributed to the growing field of student transitions through university, examining how digital tools, pedagogical design, and wellbeing support can improve the experience and outcomes of learners entering higher education.
My career began in journalism, and the communication, creativity, and critical thinking skills developed through that discipline continue to underpin my academic and pedagogical approach. I began teaching in higher education, initially on the BA Primary Education with QTS programme, where I led modules in ICT, Mathematics, and Geography. Since then, I have continued to combine research, teaching, and international collaboration to help develop reflective, innovative practitioners ready to shape the future of education.
